The word metamorphosis derives from Ancient Greek μεταμόρφωσις, "transformation, transforming", from μετα- ( meta-), "after" and μορφή ( morphe), "form". Generally organisms with a larval stage undergo metamorphosis, and during metamorphosis the organism loses larval characteristics.
