Vibe dc original12/10/2023 ![]() IGN: So I guess it’s safe to say that there’s probably not going to be a whole lot of breakdancing in this book? Kreisberg: No, there will not be a lot of breakdancing. What was most exciting for us was the opportunity to create almost a real person who gets thrust into this world that the audience can really relate to and that we can really dig into as a person. The DC Universe is populated with a lot of god-like characters like Superman, Wonder Woman, Martian Manhunter, and a lot of inscrutable characters like Batman. He has a lot of questions and he’s got a lot of fears. And he reacts in what we hope is a very realistic way. In some ways, he’s teenage me or teenage you, and suddenly he gets to be with the Justice League. In some ways, there’s sort of a wish fulfillment for comic book fans because he’s a teenage kid that’s suddenly given superpowers and suddenly he’s in the Justice League of America working alongside the heroes that he, as a kid, had worshipped. I think the biggest change we’ve made to him that is the exciting part for us as writers is that we’ve made him a really grounded person and a very realistic person. Geoff said, “The bigger the risk, the bigger the reward.” This is a big risk, so we’re hoping for a big reward. And then turning him into somebody that they love. Taking somebody that people either aren’t familiar with at all or, if they are familiar with him, they don’t have the greatest affection for him. One of the things that was so exciting for me when Geoff Johns brought me the idea of us bringing Vibe back was the idea of starting from scratch with this character. Vibe was sort of a kitschy character from the 80s who I think was born of a desire to capitalize on the breakdancing craze and do something they thought the kids would think was “hip.” Which is never, generally speaking, a good starting point. Who is this character and what do you find compelling about him? Andrew Kreisberg: It’s funny, I think most people probably aren’t familiar with Vibe, so that’s a good way to start. IGN Comics: I admit that I’m not really familiar with Vibe other than by name. ![]()
